10 Minutes: On the CEO agenda

Continued volatility and uncertainty have taken a toll on CEO confidence in their prospects for business growth in 2012. But despite the many unknowns, companies aren’t on the defensive. Drawing on the findings from our 15th Annual Global CEO Survey, 10 Minutes on the CEO agenda explores eight critical questions for business leaders as they position their companies for long-term growth in their priority markets.

This publication’s key findings are:

  • Companies are getting closer to their local markets wherever they are.
  • Many are expanding capabilities in their priority markets and innovating locally to better serve new customers in new segments.
  • Seeking growth outside familiar markets calls for careful monitoring of ongoing risks, both at the local level and by considering their potential impacts on global businesses.
  • CEOs are also challenged to address talent issues more systematically and strategically in all their markets.

Water: Challenges, drivers and solutions

PwC has published a report on the dynamics and patterns of water management to support the development of models for tomorrow. Water has become one of the leading modern day challenges in this early part of the third millennium as increases in population, human activity and climate changes have made water a scarce resource. Water management has consequently become both difficult and complex and is now a central concern for many – public and private operators, elected officials, associations and citizen-consumers.

This report looks at the following issues:

  • The major challenges and stabilizing factors for the water sector
  • Key players in the water value chain
  • Private operators: competitive forces, models and risks
  • Economic analysis of costs, pricing, recovery and financing of services
  • Pointers towards tomorrow’s solutions – governance, technological innovations and financing

15th Annual Global CEO Survey: Delivering results: Growth and value in a volatile world

In the PwC 15th Annual Global CEO Survey, we asked CEOs how they see the global economy evolving this year and beyond, and how they expect to deliver business results in this environment. We surveyed 1,258 business leaders in 60 countries from September to December 2011, and conducted further in-depth interviews with 38 CEOs.

In 2012, CEOs face rising uncertainty in the global economy, as developed economies struggle to sustain recoveries. We found a growing sense of preparedness and a surprising optimism: chief executives were nearly three times as confident of their companies’ growth this coming year as they were in the global economy’s growth.

This year’s focus areas are:

  • Balancing global capabilities and local opportunities
  • Resilience to global disruptions and local risks
  • The talent challenge

Profitable growth strategies for the Global Emerging Middle

The Global Emerging Middle is a class of citizens and consumers defining a critical growth horizon for companies over the coming decade. They are found largely in markets we define as the ‘Next 4 Billion’: countries like India, China, Indonesia, parts of Africa and Latin America where over 4 billion of the 7 billion people on our planet reside. Not only will this horizon define how businesses grow over the coming years, but strategies to foster profitable growth in this segment will determine whether companies can achieve sustained success.

Our report focuses on strategies adopted by leaders who have tried to grow profitably in this market. Their experiences, brought out through case studies and interviews with CEOs, and practitioners give interesting pointers for success in this market.

This publication’s discussed strategies are:

  • New value propositions
  • Innovative business models
  • Financial points of view
  • The global emerging middle framework
